I have lived in East Vancouver for the last 24 years, and Strathcona truly has such a strong sense of community. When we first moved into 877 E Hastings we were visited by the Strathcona Community Police. They have volunteer Foot, Bike and Pooch patrols to ensure the safety of Strathcona residents and they help build relationships within our neighbourhood. There have been numerous community clean ups, bike registrations, pancake breakfasts, to name a few district events. These types of activities illustrate the pride this neighbourhood takes in their community.
Strathcona is one of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods. East of downtown it has a rich history and attracts a wide array of businesses and people, among them Canada’s largest concentration of artists. In the short time we have been here, Vanmural Fest happened in August and 10 Blocks of Passion Street Gallery was on until September of 2019. The Strathcona Street Party on Campbell Ave. was on June 22nd, and featuring music, art, performances making it a family friendly activity for the whole neighbourhood. There is so much warmth and inclusion that you can’t help but feel enveloped by it. All you have to do is step off of our back balcony to see the myriad of talent displayed throughout Strathcona. We don’t feel like we picked our neighbourhood, we feel like it picked us! And we love being a part of this community.
